Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was keen to play down title talk as his team closed the gap on Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic to two points with a 1-0 win at Inverness.

Peter Pawlett's first-half goal sealed a fifth successive win for the Dons to reignite dreams of a first senior title for 30 years among the 2,900 travelling supporters.

Aberdeen may have won the League Cup last season - their first trophy for 19 years - but McInnes believes it is too soon to target the ultimate domestic prize.

He said: "For the fans, there in nothing wrong with getting excited but for us as professionals, we need to have a boring, cliched one-game-at-a-time approach.

"We have 20 league games still to play and we don't want to look too far ahead. We don't think we are this or that, we are just working hard and normally you get rewards for working hard.

"We had good opportunities to get the second goal today and I was disappointed not to get a penalty, which would have made things easier. There was a lot to like about us in terms of application and concentration. We had to change the back four today and Craig Murray has acquitted himself very well.

"To try and contain a side like Inverness for 90 minutes was always going to be difficult  We showed a real resolve and Inverness didn't get up a real head of steam for a home side, which was pleasing. We can still do better in an attacking sense. "

Inverness stay in fifth place on the back of a third straight defeat and John Hughes believes they are not getting the breaks.

The Caley Thistle manager said: "I felt we deserved something out of the game. Lady Luck is just not smiling on us at the moment.

"Aberdeen keep their shape and they defended well. Our effort and commitment was good, we were terriers with and without the ball but we need to be better with our passing.

"We need to be big and brave on the ball and we need to be slicker in the final third. Any team that comes here will know they've been in a game and that was certainly the case today."
