Colchester United striker Scott Vernon could be on the verge of a return to League One rivals Gillingham after recovering from injury.
The former Blackpool forward managed just 43 minutes in a Gills shirt when he joined them on loan earlier this season, with his time at Priestfield cut short by an ankle ligament injury.
U's assistant manager John Ward has hinted, however, that another loan spell for the 26-year-old may be the best option to help him regain full match fitness.
"Scott has only just recovered from an injury so, due to him not being able to play recently and probably not in the near future because of the weather conditions, maybe a loan spell would do him some good," he told skysports.com.
"We have had players out on loan during the season, including Jamie Guy, David Perkins and Scott of course, so it is a route that helps players regain their match fitness and if it will benefit both Scott and the football club then I am sure that we will look at that."
Promotion-chasing Colchester have been busy in the transfer marker themselves, securing the loan signings of Solomon Taiwo and Ian Henderson, but Ward insists that players will also need to be offloaded in the next few weeks.
"We've got quite a large squad of players, so we probably do need to lighten the load in that respect, but we would like to strengthen considering the position we find ourselves," he added.
"Aidy (Boothroyd) is always looking to try and improve on what we have got, but we will have to wait and see what happens in terms of exits because it isn't ideal to have such a large squad at the moment."
