Aberdeen have dropped out of the race to sign Ferne Snoyl.
Snoyl spent the second half of last season on loan at Pittodrie from Feyenoord.
Aberdeen were keen to keep Snoyl on a permanent basis, but have now shelved their plans to sign him because of his wage demands.
"We just couldn't compete with the wages that Snoyl was on at Feyenoord, so he won't be coming back to Pittodrie," Dons director of football Willie Miller told the Daily Record.
"To be honest, we were lucky to get him here for the second half of last season.
"It's proving difficult to bring in new players, but apart from the Old Firm and Hearts, every other club is in the same position.
"We don't have a draconian budget in place, there is scope to do things and I would hope that at least one more new player will be added to the squad before the new season."
