Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood completed the signing of goalkeeper Jamie Langfield and threw down a challenge to dislodge current number one Ryan Esson.

Langfield, 25, finalised a three-year deal at Pittodrie after failing to make a single appearance for Dumfermline last season.

The former Partick Thistle, Raith Rovers and Dundee goalkeeper failed to dislodge Derek Stillie at Dunfermline and now faces a bigger struggle against Scotland understudy Esson and David Preece.

It is a daunting prospect but one Calderwood is adamant Langfield will rise to: "It is a big challenge, but it show's the character Langfield has," said Calderwood.

"The lad had options to join other clubs as their number one but chose instead to come here and will compete with Ryan Esson and David Preece for the starting jersey.

"He was a Scotland Under-21 international and I believe that he has the ability to get back into the international reckoning."
