Aberdeen have released six players and put another four on the transfer list as they begin plans for next season.

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood is busy reshaping his squad and has decided to let six players leave Pittodrie.

The six to be released are Noel Whelan, Phil McGuire, Lubomir Blaha, Thorarinn Kristjansson, Markus Heikkinen and Mikko Paatelainen.

Whelan has failed to establish himself at Pittodrie since arriving last summer and made only 23 appearances for The Dons.

McGuire's release comes as something of a surprise as the 26-year-old has been a regular in the side.

The club have also told Heikkinen that he can leave the club after turning down the offer of a new deal.

The four players that have been placed on the transfer list are goalkeeper David Preece, Scott Morrison and former Motherwell duo Derek Adams and Steven Craig.

Calderwood has decided to wield the axe in a bid to raise funds for his own spending plans in the summer.
