East Fife are fourth from bottom in Scotland's third division, but they still managed to hold out their SPL opponents - and will now look forward to a money-spinning replay at East End Park.
Hearts, will also need a replay to go through after they were held to a 0-0 draw at Partick Thistle.
Hibernian booked their place in the fourth round with 2-0 success against Dundee at Easter Road.
Steven Whittaker opened the scoring with just 14 minutes left before Sam Morrow sealed the win late on.
Motherwell became the first SPL outfit to drop out of the competition after they lost 2-0 at Kilmarnock.
Gary McDonald (42) and Kris Boyd (45) did the damage late in the second half for Killie. Stephen Craigan was sent off late on for Motherwell.
Aberdeen avoided embarrassment as they overcame Arbroath 2-0 with Markus Heikkinen (12) and Darren Mackie (67) scoring.
Clyde overcame their Division One promotion rivals Falkirk 3-0 at The Broadwood Stadium.
Ian Harty (35 & 72) and Gary Bollan (68) grabbed the goals for The Bully Wee.
Division Two Alloa produced a shock as they won 2-0 at Division One Raith Rovers.
John Ovenstone put The Wasps ahead on the stroke of half time and Brown Ferguson sealed the win in the final minute with a penalty.
St Mirren booked their place in round four with a 3-0 win over Hamilton Academicals.
Stewart Kean (24 & 80) and Alan Russell scored to send the Love Street outfit through.
Queen of the South avoided an upset at Montrose as they won 2-1.
Derek Lyle put the visitors ahead after 42 minutes only for Craig Smart to level for The Gable Endies.
However, The Doonhammers were not to be denied as William Gibson struck early in the second period to give them victory.
Brechin City progressed with a comfortable 3-0 win at Berwick Rangers.
City goals came from Steven Hampshire, Craig Winter and Steven Hamilton.
The most goals came at Somerset Park as Ayr United played out a 3-3 draw with Stranraer.
Craig Conway put Ayr ahead before a glut of goals either side of half time which saw four in just three minutes.
Gary McCutcheon levelled for the visitors, but Andrew Ferguson scored again - only for Stranraer to equalise from the kick off through Kevin Gaughan.
Just a minute into the second period and Darren Henderson put Ayr ahead once again, but Derek Wingate made sure of a replay when he struck 19 minutes from time.
The games at Ross County, Livingston and Gretna were all postponed.
