HEARTS put ten points between themselves and fourth place Kilmarnock after they beat Dunfermline Athletic 1-0 at East End Park.
Both sides remain in the top six on the final day of the split in the Scottish Premier League but Hearts showed they are the closest challengers to the two Glasgow giants who play on Sunday when Scotland international defender Steven Pressley notched a penalty home after 57 minutes.
All the other sides involved in Saturday's action had no chance of being involved in the top half split but Partick Thistle managed to secure their first win at home since December as they beat bottom club Motherwell 3-0.
Alex Burns gave Thistle the lead on 29 minutes before a Gerry Britton double (68, 87) secured the win.
Dundee United, who have only recorded two home wins all season scored the opener on 23 minutes against Hibernian through David McCracken but a Thomas McManus penalty on 58 minutes and Ian Murray's last-minute goal made it a successful day all round for the Edinburgh clubs.
Aberdeen recorded a 1-0 win over Livingston at Pittodrie.
Leigh Hinds scored the only goal of the game on 25 minutes as Livi had Barry Wilson sent-off in the last few minutes for violent conduct.
