Rangers PLC chairman David Somers is confident the club is entering a new successful era, despite the lack of fans at the League Cup quarter-final win over St Johnstone.

The Light Blues reached the semi-finals of the competition with a 1-0 victory over the Scottish Premiership side, but only 13,023 were at Ibrox due to a boycott by supporters.

There were also protests outside the stadium from The Sons of Struth group, who have been campaigning to remove football board chairman Sandy Easdale.

Sky Sports' Luke Shanley reports from Ibrox, where he gives us the latest of the ongoing at Rangers FC regarding Derek Llambias & David Somers

The Rangers board have been engaged in talks throughout the week after they accepted a £2m emergency loan offer from Newcastle owner Mike Ashley.

Former Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias and Barry Leach, who is head of brands at Ashley's company Sports Direct, have been appointed as consultants and Somers believes the club is in safe hands.

Discussing the arrival of Llambias, Somers said: “He’s a consultant and the only other thing I will say is that I’m sure everything will turn out for the best.

“I’ve invited him and Barry Leach in as consultants just to help us out. I think everything will turn out for the best.

“It’s good to get investment into the club.”

On his arrival at the ground, Easdale revealed there had been no major developments in the past few hours and would not be holding negotiations with Llambias.

"I've not got any updates, I've not been in. Since last night, everything has been the same," he said.

"We've not really got time frames. We were at the game last night and obviously we had a good win. It takes us forward in that cup and we continue to challenge in the league."

Questioned about talks with Llambias, Easdale said: "Just chit-chat about football and stuff. Nothing serious.

"I won't have discussions personally with him over the next few days, that's the PLC.

"I don't really need anything from Derek at the moment. That's a different department from me. I'm just here to help along with the club and the operations of the club."

Asked if he wanted to win back the fans, Easdale replied: "Definitely."
