Former director of football not in talks with Green consortium

Gordon Smith has rejected reports that he is in talks with the prospective new owners of Rangers about a return to Ibrox. Former Rangers forward Smith was pictured at Ibrox on Wednesday, fuelling rumours of a possible return to the club in a role with the Charles Green-led consortium. Some media outlets claimed Smith was at Ibrox to hold talks with Green's group, but the former Scottish Football Association chief executive claims he was only returning some mail to Rangers. Smith left his role as director of football with the Gers in February as a result of the club's plunge into administration. Smith has moved to dismiss the rumours of his possible involvement with the Green consortium and insists he has no plans to return. "Yesterday I returned mail that had been left at Murray Park in the name of director Of football which I am no longer," Smith told skysports.com. "I entered via the Argyle house entry where cameras had been set up. I kindly asked not to be photographed or filmed.

Amazement

"I handed the backlogged mail in to the club and left. To my amazement on the news it had been edited to show me leaving and then the new consortium leaving as if we had left together. "I am in no talks with either of the consortium and will not be returning to Rangers and this has never been discussed or mentioned. "I wish Glasgow Rangers all the best in the future." Smith's agent, Jonathan Hope, admitted his disappointment at how Smith's visit to Ibrox was broadcast and confirmed Smith is attracting interest from clubs in England and the Middle East. "I am deeply unhappy about how my client has been portrayed by the media yesterday," he said. "Gordon returned to return backlogged mail which was received to him via his son and as he is no longer in tenure he felt the need to return it to the club.
Options
"My concern is I am working on options for Gordon in the Middle East and also in the UK at the highest level. "It's time I spoke up and I believe Rangers signed Gordon as director of football to use his credibility, which is at the highest level coming from the chief executive of the SFA. "He had no power to do the job that was offered and accepted. "In effect, it is of my opinion Gordon was used by the regime to bring positive status. "Now I can confirm we have held no talks with Glasgow Rangers on a return and we have no intention of doing so. "I find it disturbing that Gordon is now getting linked to a consortium takeover which is absolutely not the case. "Gordon Smith loves Glasgow Rangers but is merely a fan now. I wish Glasgow Rangers all the success in the world but as a fan knowing perhaps a little more than most my opinion is trouble lies ahead further."
