Rangers will be without defender Alan Hutton for the remainder of the season after the defender broke a leg against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Gers moved six points clear of Celtic with victory over Kilmarnock, but the win came at a cost with Hutton picking up a serious injury.

Hutton suffered the injury when attempting to win the ball from Gary Hay and Gers chief Alex McLeish confirmed the defender will go under the surgeon's knife immediately.

"Alan has broken his leg and is going to be out of action for six months," said McLeish.

"He will be operated on tomorrow (Sunday) after swift action from the medical team and we feel very sorry for Alan. His injury tarnished a really good victory.

"Right back has been a problem position for us this season as nobody has really shown the consistency we would look for at this club, but Alan had taken up the gauntlet and had shown the promise of last year was back again.

"It is now up to one of the other players to come in and do what Alan Hutton had been doing."
