Rangers striker Steven Thompson is targeting a return to action in next month's Old Firm Tennents Scottish Cup encounter with Celtic.

The Scottish international has been out of action since September with a serious knee injury, but he returned to training last week.

Thompson played for 45 minutes of Monday night's Under-21 victory over Aberdeen, and although he picked up a thigh muscle injury, he believes he will be ready to return against The Bhoys on March 7.

"It was great to be back, but I'm disappointed that I suffered a bit of a dead leg," Thompson told the club's official website.

"I went into a challenge after about 20 minutes and I got caught on the thigh and I just felt it tighten up.

"It's annoying more than anything else because it has set me back a couple of days.

"I won't be able to play against Aberdeen on Wednesday, but I will be fine for next Monday's game against Hibs.

"The knee was absolutely fine and that's the main thing."
