The Gers made hard work of their trip across Glasgow to Firhill and manager Alex McLeish will be concerned at the lack of potency his side showed.
However, a real moment of class - the only one in the whole game - saw Peter Lovenkrands come in from the left flank and drill a superb effort past Kenny Arthur for the winner.
The Dane's day, though, was soured just minutes later when he was caught by a late tackle from Thistle's Ian Ross and was stretched off the pitch.
Rangers never looked comfortable during the game, but young French midfielder Hamad Namouchi again put in a very promising display and he could have opened the scoring but he blasted wide after Nuno Capucho's lay-off.
James Grady then fired wide for Thistle, who struggled to create many clear-cut chances against a Gers defence that featured Frank de Boer for the first time.
Lovenkrands then had the best effort of the first half when he unleashed a terrific 25-yard effort, but Arthur was there to tip the ball over.
With the rain coming down heavily in the second period, the match became even more of a turgid affair - the goal from Lovenkrands aside.
The winner came with 14 minutes remaining when the Dane picked the ball up on the left, he cut back inside past Jean-Yves Anis and powered his way into the area before firing past Arthur into the corner.
