RANGERS striker Steven Thompson is extremely doubtful for Scotland's crucial Euro 2004 qualifier with Lithuania next month.

Thompson, who starred in the 2-1 defeat in Germany earlier in the month, picked up a knee injury in for Rangers against Dunfermline two weeks ago.

Gers boss Alex McLeish admitted the former Dundee United hit-man was very doubtful for the Scotland game.

"He must be considered doubtful for Lithuania," said McLeish.

"We have already been in contact with Scotland's medical people and we have made sure that Berti Vogts has been kept up to speed with his progress."

Scotland currently lie third in Group Five and need to beat Lithuania and hope Iceland fail to win in Germany to clinch second place and a play-off spot for next summer's finals.
