GLASGOW RANGERS have confirmed that they have entered into talks with Dundee United's Scottish international striker Steven Thompson as veteran Billy Dodds closes in on a move in the opposite direction.

Rangers have long refuted speculation linking them to the 24-year-old marksman, but have now admitted that the Tannadice man is firmly in their sights.

"Rangers are in discussions with Steven Thompson of Dundee United but at the moment we have nothing further to say," said Rangers commercial director, Martin Bain.

Meanwhile, the Terrors have called a press conference for 3pm on Monday afternoon where they are expected to seal the capture of 33-year-old Dodds.

The former Aberdeen hit-man has fallen well down the Ibrox pecking order playing in only six league games this term, and is now set to complete a return to United after agreeing a pay-off package with the Glasgow giants.

Paul Hegarty's men are currently propping up the SPL, and see the former Scottish international as the man to provide them with the firepower to move away from the relegation zone.
