SPL round-up

Celtic remain top of the SPL after a less than comfortable 1-0 win at Aberdeen.

Celtic remain top of The SPL, and are now a point clear of second, after a less than comfortable 1-0 win at Aberdeen.

The champions dominated possession and midfield enforcer Thomas Gravesen bossed the game for large periods.

However, Celtic found it hard to find a way through an Aberdeen defence excellently marshalled by captain Russell Anderson.

But with just 11 minutes left Celtic broke through with a scrappy effort. Substitute Kenny Miller worked the ball on the edge of the area to Dutch star Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (pictured) and his effort somehow managed to find the back of the net going through a cluster of defenders and goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.

The Dons rallied and almost levelled when Anderson's header came back off the bar and then following that Lee Naylor was very fortunate not to have a handball spotted by the officials, but Celtic managed to hang on and claim the spoils.

Rangers maintained their unbeaten start to the season and moved into second as they beat Falkirk 4-0 at Ibrox.

Loanee Phil Bardsley opened his account for the club with the opener after 17 minutes and the lead was doubled before half time when Dado Prso struck.

The second half saw The Gers double their tally with Kris Boyd (68) firing home from the penalty spot and Thomas Buffel (78) registering.

Rangers moved second because Hearts were stunned 1-0 at home to St Mirren - who now find themselves in fourth.

The only goal at Tynecastle came with just eight minutes remaining when Stewart Kean scored.

Dunfermline climbed off the bottom of the table as they clinched a 3-2 win over Kilmarnock at East End Park.

Danny Invincible (9) put Kille ahead early on, but Darren Young levelled just before the break.

Gary Wales again handed the visitors the advantage soon into the second period, but late goals from Gary Wales (73) and Stevie Crawford (84) meant an opening win of the season for The Pars.

Motherwell find themselves bottom of the table after they suffered a 4-1 home loss to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Ross Tokely (25) and Craig Dargo (48) put Caley two goals to the good and Scott McDonald's goal (72) proved a mere consolation for the home side as Grant Munro (79) and Liam Keogh (87) made for a hefty home loss.
