Martin O'Neill opted to rest several key players for the clash but it made little difference as the SPL champions romped to victory.
The deadlock was broken as early as the second minute when Momo Sylla scored and Ross Wallace soon made it 2-0.
Bobo Balde and Paul Lambert both added to the tally before the interval while Celtic went nap in the 48th minute courtesy of Stephen McManus.
Wallace then completed his hat-trick with goals on 57 and 85 minutes, either side of Andy Thomson's effort for Falkirk, and the scoring was completed in the last minute through Aidan McGeady.
Holders Livingston produced a fine comeback to nick an extra time victory over fellow SPL side Dundee.
The visitors appeared set fair for the next round when Steven Robb scored midway through the second half.
But Jim Hamilton equalised from the penalty spot in the final minute of normal time before grabbing the winner in the 111th minute.
Dundee United fared better than their Tayside foes as they walloped Clyde 4-0 at Tannadice.
Jim McIntyre eased the nerves on 35 minutes before Barry Robson's goal on the stroke of half time handed The Terrors a cushion.
Grant Brebner put further daylight between the teams on 55 minutes and ten minutes later Mark Wilson's penalty rounded off the scoring.
