Following a scoreless first half in which Celtic's Henrik Larsson missed an early penalty, The Bhoys would take the lead through the prolific Swede eight minutes after the break.
The home side doubled their lead when The Well's Scott Leitch put into his own net 14 minutes later as the own-goal proved to be Celtic's winner.
Joos Valgaeren scored Celtic's third five minutes after Leitch's own-goal as Martin O'Neill's side were cruising at this stage.
However, Motherwell got one back two minutes later when Dirk Lehmann scored a consolation for Terry Butcher's men.
The Fir Park club finished the last ten minutes of the match with ten men when Shaun Fagan was sent off for two yellow card offences.
Rangers kept within touching distance of their arch-rivals with a 4-0 thrashing of Hearts at Tynecastle.
Fernando Ricksen broke the deadlock seven minutes after the break for The Gers before the home side were forced to finish the match a man short.
The Jambos' Alan Maybury was sent off for two yellow card offences six minutes later.
Alex McLeish's men made the extra man pay as Barry Ferguson made it two from the penalty spot with 11 minutes remaining.
Ricksen got his second and Rangers' third two minutes later before Stephen Hughes capped another emphatic victory for the visitors with a fourth goal in the final minute of the match.
