Crainey out to prove himself

CELTIC starlet Stephen Crainey is hoping to overcome his recent injury problems to build on his success of last season.

The highly-rated defender made the breakthrough into the Scotland set-up after impressing in the Bhoys first-team at the back end of last season.

Crainey saw his progress interrupted by a niggling ankle injury which ruled him out of Scotland's Far East tour and he missed Celtic's opening game of the season against Dunfermline last weekend.

The 21-year-old saw his chances of first-team football threatened by the return to fitness of Joos Valgaeren and the new signing of Ulrik Laursen, but Crainey is eager to prove his worth.

He is set to make his return to action against Tottenham in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday and he hopes to do enough to keep his place in the side.

"I feel I'm due a run of luck now on the injury front," said Crainey. "It was a massive boost to my confidence to be singled out for praise by the national team manager and I had a sustained run of first-team games at club level after that.

"I still want to be first choice at Celtic Park but, at the age of 21, this is a season that is massively important to me.

"I haven't asked for any talks with the manager because I believe what you do in training and competitive matches speaks volumes about any player.

"That's why it would be good to show what I can do against Spurs.

"I need to get into the Celtic team in time for the game at Pittodrie because that could be the difference between being in or out of the Scotland squad."
