The Belgian international is set to undergo a hernia operation to cure a long-standing injury as he hopes to be fit for this summer's World Cup finals.
The 26-year-old has not featured for The Bhoys since the CIS Cup clash with Rangers last month and he is set to be out of action for six weeks.
Bhoys boss Martin O'Neill admitted that the news was a big blow to his side, but that it would give Stephen Crainey an extended run in the side.
"This is an absolutely massive disappointment for us," O'Neill told the club's official website Since Joos came to the club almost two years ago he has been terrific."
"As an up-and-coming young Scot, Stephen Crainey received much praise for his performances on Sunday and hopefully he will continue to improve as time goes by.
"With Joos under the surgeon's knife for the hernia operation, we will need all the help we can get between now and the end of the season.
"Stephen will certainly have a part to play for us."
