Star striker Henrik Larsson grabbed two fine headed goals either side of half-time and a superb free-kick from Stilian Petrov and late goal from substitute Shaun Maloney secured the win for Martin O'Neill's men.
Dundee will feel a little aggrieved at the score-line as they were the dominant team for most of the first half.
The Dark Blues immediately went on the offensive and within eight minutes, Georgi Nemsadze had forced Dee old boy Rob Douglas into action with a curling free-kick that needed a fingertip stop.
Douglas then hurtled off his line to prevent Mark Robertson stabbing home Nemsadze'a through pass before going on to show his old club how much he has improved by producing a reflex stop to keep out Alex Rae's point-blank volley.
The home side were forced to pay their wastefulness up front when Larsson fired Celtic in front on the stroke of half-time with a superb header.
The Swede rose highest to head Lubomir Moravcik's free kick powerfully past Jamie Langfield in the Dundee goal.
The champions doubled their lead on the hour when Larsson again rose at the back post to head home Alan Thompson's corner for his sixth goal of the season.
Larsson also played a part in Celtic's third as he won the free-kick from which the returning Petrov blasted home.
The visitors were awarded the free-kick 25 yards from goal after Walter del Rio was booked for fouling Larsson.
Larsson tapped the ball off to Petrov, who had only been on five minutes, to unleash a thumping shot into the top left hand corner of Langfield's goal for an early goal of the season contender.
Del Rio was sent-off after 74 minutes for his second bookable offence after another foul on Larsson.
Celtic made their numerical advantage count with the fourth and final goal from Larsson's replacement Maloney six minutes from time.
The youngster ran on to Paul Lambert's pass to coolly slot home his first senior goal for the club to cap a satisfactory night for O'Neill's men as they prepare to face Juventus on Tuesday night in their first Champions League game.
