Newly-appointed Scotland performance director Brian McClair has vowed to take an active approach to the role

Newly-appointed Scotland performance director Brian McClair has vowed to take an active approach to the role.

The former Manchester United and Scotland forward, 51, takes over the position from Mark Wotte and will officially begin his tenure on June 1.

McClair said: "First priority when I start the role, I'm intending to get on the road. There are a number of projects I can only view by going to clubs and performance schools.

"We'll be travelling and very much involved with young teams. We want to see the benefits right away. One of the things we saw yesterday that's prevalent in the way I see life is that the first person I met yesterday, I made them laugh.

"Working with young players gives you great pleasure and keeps you fresh and interested. I want to try and make a difference, and for them to enjoy themselves and have fun."

McClair's post-playing career has included the role of Blackburn assistant manager in the 1998/99 season and, more recently, Director of Youth Academy at United.

McClair won 30 caps for Scotland and scored two goals.
