Dundee United winger Gary Mackay-Steven has signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club in the summer..

The Scotland international, who is entering the last six months of his deal at Tannadice, was the subject of two unsuccessful bids from Sky Bet League One side Sheffield United earlier this month.

He is considered one of the brightest prospects in Scottish football and will offer stiff competition to Callum McGregor, who signed a new five-year deal with the club last August.

Mackay-Steven, who was capped three times at U21 level and has one full cap, began his career at youth level with Ross County, Liverpool and Fulham before starting as a pro with Airdrie United.

After one season with the Lanarkshire club he moved to Tannadice where he has been a regular in the first team over the past three-and-a-half years.

In a statement on their website, Celtic said: “Celtic are delighted to announce that Gary Mackay-Steven has signed a pre-contract agreement and he will join the club this summer.

“The 24-year-old made his first-team debut for Dundee United back in July 2011, and he has gone on to make almost 130 appearances for the Tannadice side, scoring 27 goals. He has also been capped by Scotland.
