Scottish Championship: Andy Goram admits concern at lack of 'Rangers men' at Ibrox

Andy Goram has again called for 'Rangers men' to be given the chance to help the club out of its latest financial crisis.

And the former Scotland goalkeper, who spent seven years at Ibrox during the 1990s, believes the lack of a former player on the current board is hampering their chances of reaching Scottish football's top flight this season.

Andy Goram called for caretaker manager Kenny McDowall to ring the changes at Ibrox

Over the weekend three businessmen – including prominent Rangers fan and multi-millionaire Douglas Park – offered a £6.5m investment in the club by buying up all 40.7m shares due to be issued in a share offer next month.

Rangers reportedly require over £8m to see them through the remainder of the campaign and the new offer surfaced just hours before they lost 4-0 at Hibernian to fall 15 points behind leaders Hearts in the Championship table.

Speaking to the Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ, Goram said: "I didn't think it could get any worse but obviously it has. It was a terrible result on Saturday.

"I think the board bowed down to fans who wanted Ally McCoist out. They wanted change. Ally has been put on gardening leave but he is still on the same money which is fine as he deserves that.

'Fantastic'

"Kenny McDowall has been brought in as the manager until the end of the season but we still have the same coaching staff, we still play the same system and we still have the same players so nothing has really changed.

"But Kenny will do it his way now. He will have to make changes because you can't hope things will turn around. You have to make them turn around.

"Don't take anything away from Hibs. they were fantastic against Rangers but there certainly needs to be changes now because that is not acceptable the way they went about it last Saturday."

Asked if Rangers can now hope to attract an experienced manager in the summer, Goram added: "It's a well wanted job, there is no doubt about that.

"It is still one of the biggest clubs in the world. The football has not been great which is well documented but the problem for me is there is not a football man on the board.

"They are all businessmen on the board of directors. There is not a football man there, former players like Walter Smith or John Greig, whereas in years gone by you could actually ask their advice.

"So it's going to be difficult for the board to make this decision because they certainly need a lot of advice on this one."

Last week the Scottish Football Association blocked Newcastle owner Mike Ashley's attempts to take his holding in the Ibrox club to 29.9 per cent, from just under nine per cent, a move by the governing body which came as no surprise to Goram.

'Rescue package'

"We all knew Mike Ashley would not be given control. We knew that all along because it's the law," he said.

"Rangers are in the middle of getting a rescue package off Douglas Park, who is a well known Rangers man up here, but they are still looking for outside investment.

"I don't see why they don't take Douglas Park's investment. He wants two seats on the board and that may be the problem, but we certainly need to do it pretty quickly or we'll be back in trouble again.

"I dont understand the situation with Dave King. They accepted a £2.5m loan off Mike Ashley which is fine if that's the way they want to go, but they knocked back £16m from Dave King claiming he couldn't show proof of funds.

"I find that strange. £16m would have put us through for another two years and again its another Rangers man on board.

"They would look after the club. Dave King coming back in would be great. (Brian) Kennedy (Sale Sharks owner) from England and Douglas Park... we need all the help we can at the moment."
