Having lost out to AC Milan in midweek to crash out of continental competition for another season, the cup holders ran riot in Edinburgh with Kris Commons bagging a hat-trick in an imperious display on Neil Lennon's 200th game in charge of the club.
Three minutes had elapsed when Joe Ledley fed Commons down the inside-left channel and the midfielder fired beyond Jamie MacDonald and in off the far post.
The home side - with no outfield player over the age of 22 - was caught napping as Charlie Mulgrew picked out Commons (21) with a quickly taken free-kick and the Scotland international cracked in his second from the angle.
Callum Paterson got the better of Efe Ambrose but Fraser Forster was equal to the finish but it was that man Commons who continued to hog the limelight, his chipped finish forcing MacDonald into an acrobatic tip over.
But it was to be only a temporary reprieve as more incisive passing cut open the home defence and Scott Brown (34) was on hand to tap into an empty net after Ledley's shot was deflected onto the post.
Hearts' heads dropped and Ledley (42) made it four as he tapped in Mikael Lustig's inch-perfect cross before the creator of that goal lashed one in off the bar from 24 yards to round off a stellar 45 minutes from Celtic.
With the game long-since over as a contest, the second-half was a more sedate affair, the highlight coming when Commons completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot (59) after Danny Wilson was harshly penalised for handball.
Hearts, to their credit, kept going even after Brown (75) rubbed salt in the wounds with a deflected seventh; the cash-strapped Edinburgh club have bigger battles to fight off the field.
