Rangers holding fire on winger due to compensation demand

Rangers have pulled out of the deal to sign free agent Salim Kerkar for now as Gueugnon want compensation. Manager Walter Smith thought the French-Algerian winger was available for nothing following his release last summer. However, as the French third division outfit are seeking compensation, Smith admits any hopes of a deal are now on hold. Smith has tried to resolve the situation with Fifa, but with world football's governing body stalling, so has the transfer. "Unfortunately for the lad we can't get a decision from Fifa in terms of compensation," he told the club's official website. "Gueugnon have released him but they are still claiming compensation. "So while this situation remains the same we won't be taking him."
