Sheffield United are optimistic that Gary Naysmith will accept the offer of a new contract to stay at Bramall Lane.

The full-back's current deal expires at the end of June and he has been offered reduced terms to prolong his time with the Championship club.

Naysmith has a month to decide on the deal and the Blades' chief executive Trevor Birch hopes the Scotland international agrees an extension.

"We've been speaking with Gary and a new deal has been put to him," Birch told The Star.

"Hopefully he says 'yes', but the rules are such that he has a month to give us an answer.

"We've made it plain that we want him to stay and that he still has a valuable contribution to make."

The 31-year-old was restricted to just two appearances for the Blades during the past season after being sidelined by a long-term knee problem.
