Mehmet signs with Stewart set to follow

Billy Mehmet has completed his move to Genclerbirligi, who are also set to seal a deal for fellow SPL man Michael Stewart. Skysports.com revealed that Mehmet was set to sign for the Turkish club, and he has now penned a three-year deal. The St Mirren striker will officially move on 1st July when his contract expires, and he will join the club on a Bosman free transfer. Genclerbirligi have confirmed that they are also looking to finalise a similar deal for Stewart. The Scotland international midfielder is also a free agent and he looks set to leave Hearts after arriving in Ankara for talks. Speaking after completing his deal, Mehmet told skysports.com that he was pleased but also paid tribute to his former boss. "I can't thank Gus MacPherson [St Mirren manager] and Andy Millen [assistant] enough," said Mehmet. "They have been great with me and I just hope the board at the club will give them the backing they deserve as they could do so much. "The fans have been incredible and I would like to pay tribute to them as they have been tremendous throughout my stay with the club." Mehmet confirmed he shunned numerous offers to stay in Britain to try his hand in Turkey. "There were offers from Scotland and England, but when the chance to move to Turkey came up, I had to give it a look," he said. "And when I saw the facilities and the club I could not say no."
