Beasley seeks new Gers deal

Rangers midfielder DaMarcus Beasley says he wants to open contract talks in a bid to extend his stay at the club.

American wants to regain first team place

Rangers' winger DaMarcus Beasley says he wants to remain at the club, but revealed he has yet to be contacted over his future. Beasley's contract runs out at the end of the season - meaning he is free to speak with other team about the possibility of a switch - although the American insisted he would like to remain at Ibrox. His future at the Glasgow giants looked in peril after he failed to establish himself in the squad following a spate of injury problems. But manager Walter Smith handed his player a lifeline by giving Beasley an extended run in the side, a period which coincided with Rangers returning to the top of the SPL. A recent thigh tear has seen him return to the sidelines though, but Beasley has said he wants to remain at the club beyond the end of the season. He said: "I've not spoken to Rangers or anybody else about what I'm going to do after the six months. I'll see what goes on and what happens in the last half of the season. "I've never said I want to leave so if they came to me, my representatives would sit down and talk to them and see what is the best thing for me. "If the best thing is for me to stay, I would be more than happy to stay. I've only played five or six games so it's kind of hard for me to talk about contract talks. "I just want to play and get back in the team and show why they bought me." Despite reiterating his desire to stay with the Scottish champions, the 27-year-old said he would not rule out talking to other clubs in a bid to secure his future. Asked whether he will exercise his right to speak to other clubs this month, he said: "I don't know yet. "I'm just trying to get back in the team and get fit. What happens in January will happen, but I'm not looking to leave. "If something came along that I couldn't pass up, then so be it. But, at the same time, I'm not looking to leave. I want to stay." Rangers have huge financial worries to contend with and the January transfer window could see Smith's best players leaving the club. Bosses at the Old Firm club have insisted playing staff would not have to be sold to service a £30m debt, although speculation has been rife about the likes of star names Kris Boyd and Pedro Mendes. And Beasley said it was vital his side kept hold of top talent to retain their SPL title. When asked whether keeping players was key to winning silverware, he said: "Yes, 100%. When you look at the team now, if a couple of guys get injured, we're pretty thin in every position. We need our guys to stay. "With myself and Pedro Mendes and Steven Naismith to come back into the team, it's going to create problems for the gaffer to pick who is going to play but it's a good problem to have. "We need everyone to stay - Boydy, Pedro. All the people that have been mentioned, we need them to stay and help us to regain the title and be back-to-back champions." Beasley has missed Rangers' last three clashes, including the derby with bitter rivals Celtic in which the Gers picked up a useful point in a 1-1 draw. Smith's men now sit seven points clear of their challengers, a fact which Beasley believes gives his team the edge in the title race. "The last three games - Hibs, Dundee United and Celtic - were pretty much the three toughest games we had in the first half of the season," Beasley said. "We got the results we wanted. We didn't play as well as we wanted to in the Celtic game but we got a point and I think that is going to be a very crucial point come the end of the season. I think it gives us a mental advantage as well."
