Portuguese side admit interest in Rangers midfielder

Sporting Lisbon coach Carlos Carvalhal has admitted his interest in Rangers midfielder Pedro Mendes. The Portuguese ace is a firm favourite at Ibrox but reports suggest that the Gers are prepared to cash in on the former Tottenham man in a desperate bid to raise funds to offer striker Kris Boyd a new contract. Boyd, whose deal expires in the summer, has been strongly linked with a move to Middlesbrough, as reported by skysports.com on Tuesday, with Birmingham also thought to be monitoring the situation. Mendes has been sidelined for the past two months with a knee injury but returned to training earlier this week and is expected back playing within a fortnight. "It is normal that we look at a player of this quality," Carvalhal told the Scottish Sun. "But the matter does not just depend on me. A lot will depend on my directors and what they want to do."
