Midfielder set for scan on calf problem

Liam Miller could be set to miss Republic of Ireland's crunch World Cup play-off clash with France on Saturday. The Hibernian midfielder is set to undergo a scan on Tuesday night in order to determine the severity of a calf injury. The 27-year-old will then be assessed on Wednesday as the Republic look to step up their preparations for the weekend's World Cup qualifying contest in Dublin. Should the former Manchester United and Sunderland man be deemed unfit for duty, he will be sent back to his club for further treatment and a well-earned rest. Giovanni Trapattoni will resist the urge to call up a replacement if Miller is forced home, as the Italian has an otherwise fully-fit squad from which to choose. There had been slight concerns over the health of Fulham winger Damien Duff, who has been carrying a slight Achilles problem, but he was able to take part in full training on Tuesday.
