Mendes and Bougherra out with knee problems

Rangers have been dealt a double blow with news that Pedro Mendes and Madjid Bougherra have been ruled out for the foreseeable future. Both players are out with respective knee problems but the full extent of the injuries cannot be revealed until the end of the week. Mendes was withdrawn at half-time in the Gers' nightmare 4-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Unirea Urziceni on Tuesday having given Walter Smith's men the lead after just two minutes. Meanwhile Bougherra missed the match having injured his knee in training on Monday. Mendes is thought to be the most serious case, with the Portuguese midfielder set to go for scans to diagnose the problem on Thursday. Bougherra will also have scans on his knee after letting the fluid around the affected area settle down. The Rangers medical team will know the extent of the problem at the end of the week but have already ruled the Algerian out for the next couple of weeks at least. The news will disappoint Smith as he tries to regroup his players following a dismal result against Unirea which almost certainly ended their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
