French star relishing Champions League challenge

Rangers winger Jerome Rothen has admitted the lure of European football persuaded him to move to Ibrox. The 31-year-old Frenchman revealed he had offers from a number of clubs during the summer but opted for a move to Glasgow for another crack at the UEFA Champions League. Rothen played in the 1-1 draw with Stuttgart in the Gers' opening European game, and insists his new team has what it takes to qualify from their group and go further in the competition. "I had opportunities to go to Germany or England last month and as the phone call came from Rangers asking me to come to Glasgow, PSG were even in negotiations with Schalke," he told the Daily Record. "But none of the teams who wanted to sign me were involved in the Champions League and that was important.

Chance

"I'm 31 now and as the years pass you think to yourself, 'will I get the opportunity to play at that level again? This is a fantastic chance." Walter Smith's side take on Sevilla next week as they look to make their mark on Group G, and Rothen is confident they can progress into the knockout rounds. "There's no doubt we can pass from the group stages this season. Our main objective is to finish first or second in the group and when you get down to the knockout stages, home and away, who knows what might happen? "We're definitely good enough for the last 16. We played well in the second half against Stuttgart and we must apply ourselves like that for all our matches, but the more we play the better we will become."
