Stephen Craigan believes having a new manager at Motherwell will benefit the SPL club in the long run.
Jim Gannon is now in charge of the Fir Park outfit following Mark McGhee's summer switch to Aberdeen.
Although Gannon's reign started in disastrous fashion after their shock home defeat by Llanelli in Europa League qualifying, Craigan remains optimistic.
Craigan believes Gannon's players will be looking to up their game to impress the new man, who could also be looking to freshen up his squad.
"The fact that Mark McGhee left has now opened a new avenue for a new manager to bring new players in and refresh the squad," said the Fir Park captain.
"Suddenly it raises new expectations. Players have to take their game to a new level, they have to work a little bit harder and add a little bit of an edge to their game.
"That didn't happen on Thursday night but I believe, over the piece, bringing in a new manager and new players will add a little bit of an edge to our game and hopefully take us on."
