New Dons boss confident he can lure former player to Pittodrie

Mark McGhee is hopeful that he can make Motherwell midfielder Stephen Hughes one of his first summer signings at Aberdeen. The 26-year-old became one of McGhee's first signings when he was in charge of Motherwell when Hughes joined from Leicester in 2007 and the Scottish boss is hoping that connection can work in his favour this time round. McGhee admits that Hughes has options from other SPL clubs and teams from south of the border but the new Dons chief is optimistic he can land the Well No.7. The former Wolves boss adds that another factor that may sway Hughes' decision is that the player is yet to receive a thoroughly attractive offer. "I'm fairly hopeful," he said of signing the out-of-contract midfielder. "So far Stephen's options that he's been given by his agent and by clubs don't really jump out at him. "I think we have an advantage in the sense that he knows us and he likes working with us."
