Striker doubtful ahead of Aberdeen clash

Gordon Strachan hopes Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink will be fit for Celtic's clash with Aberdeen on Saturday. The Dutch striker has been in fine form in recent outings and scored after just 30 second of the 1-1 draw with Hearts at the weekend. He then aggravated a hamstring problem and, despite completing 90 minutes, is doubtful for the home match against the Dons. "Jan has been playing with an injury but the way it was going at Tynecastle I had to keep him on because his height was so important," said Strachan. "At least he has a lot of time to get treatment and hopefully recover before we have to play again."

Maloney boost

Georgios Samaras and skipper Stephen McManus are also struggling with thigh and ankle problems respectively but there is some good news on the injury front for Strachan. Shaun Maloney has returned to fitness after suffering two hamstring tears in the space of eight weeks. He has been helped by a German specialist and is looking forward to playing a key role over the coming weeks. "It has been an incredibly frustrating time for me but hopefully I'll be able to add something to the title run-in for Celtic," he told The Times. "Right now, I don't feel like I've been helping the team much at all."
