Bees new boy aims to catch Lambert's eye

Barnet's on-loan full-back Matt Lockwood is hoping to use his loan spell at Underhill to build up his match fitness and impress Colchester United manager Paul Lambert. The former Leyton Orient defender has had a torrid time with injuries since joining Nottingham Forest in 2007 and has struggled for playing time at both the City Ground and Colchester, whom he joined in the summer. Lockwood is determined go get his U's career back on track, having been sidelined since late August with injury. "We've got another three games or so during my stay here, so by that time I will be match fit and hoping to go back to Colchester and bang on the gaffer's door for my place back," he told skysports.com. "I played a couple of reserves games at Colchester, so if I get three or four more here at Barnet I'll be ready, especially at my age, as I am used to it now having done it pretty much all my life. "I know whether I am fit enough or not, so that is the plan to get back in the side at Colchester, but they have been doing really well at the moment." The Bees are currently hovering just above the relegation zone and Bournemouth's recent revival has closed the gap to just five points, but Lockwood believes they have the quality to pull away from the drop zone. "The club are obviously in a dodgy position at the moment and every defeat is followed by a look at what Bournemouth are doing to see if they have closed the gap further on us. "I've been in training with the lads since joining and I can't work out why they are down there because they have some great players here, such as Paul Furlong and Gary Breen. "These guys have played in the Premiership, so there is a lot of quality, plus a lot of young lads who are really good. "Hopefully while I am here helping them out I can help them put a few more points on the board and steer away from the Cherries."
