Smith set to decide on next step

Motherwell goalkeeper Graeme Smith is hoping to resolve his future before the end of the season. The Scotland B international is out of contract next summer and feels the time may be right to move on having joined the Steelmen from Rangers in 2005. The 25-year-old is keeping his options open, though, and confirmed he would certainly discuss extending his stay at Fir Park. "It's an option and I'm not ruling it out so it's just about trying to get a deal done," he said. "At the end of my contract I'll have been here four years so I think that's long term already. "But it's a good wee club and there are a lot of good people at the club who always want the best for Motherwell, so we will see what happens. "The next couple of months will determine how it goes and I'm sure it will sort itself out. Sometimes it does drag on, that's football. Everyone is different with their own situation.

Quick resolution

"It's probably better for me and the club that it's done quicker than the summer so I'm sure we can try to get it sorted." Well are currently just three points off the bottom of the Scottish Premier League, making a repeat of last season's third-placed finish a tough proposition. But Mark McGhee's men can move up to seventh if they win at home against Kilmarnock on Monday and Smith insists they are determined to climb as high as they can over the remainder of the season. "I think if we all pull 5% or 10% more out of our game as a group, we will get up the table," he said. "Looking at it now, to get third again would be extremely hard. "The squad is that small, there are only about 20 of us, that it might be hard because other teams have a bigger squad. "We know we haven't been playing as well as last season. I think people used to like watching us, even other team's supporters. "We know we have not reached the heights of last season, the league table shows you that, but we have the rest of the season to change that and we are looking to do that on Monday."
