Scot gives backing to team-mate

Gavin Rae has backed Cardiff team-mate Aaron Ramsey to become 'one of the best midfielders in the country'. 17-year-old Ramsey would have become the youngest player to win the FA Cup had the Bluebirds been victorious at Wembley on Saturday. Portsmouth ran out 1-0 winners but Rae believes Ramsey can overcome the disappointment and go on to have a fantastic career. "Rambo is going to go on and be one of the best midfielders in this country," said Rae. "He has so much quality for a lad of 17. He would have been the youngest player to ever win an FA Cup if we had won it so it just shows you how mature he is as a player. He is an absolute quality player. "If he keeps his head down - which he does, he works hard - he will be in plenty more finals." Manchester United have already enquired about Ramsey, while Liverpool and Chelsea have also been linked, and the teenager had a chance to showcase his skills as he came on for the final half hour against Pompey. Ramsey was satisfied with his own performance but frustrated that he could not help Cardiff to a surprise victory.

Disappointed

The teenager said: "Obviously I'm disappointed because we felt we could win the cup. "It's always hard to come off the bench but I thought I settled in all right. We just couldn't push on that bit extra and get the goal." Cardiff were unable to sustain a push for promotion as they enjoyed their cup run and finished 12th in the Championship. They missed out on the play-offs by six points but Rae is confident they can mount a stronger challenge next season. "We're looking to kick on next season," said Rae. "We really want to be there or thereabouts for promotion. "It's not many when you look back at the points we have thrown away. We have been leading and lost goals in the last minute. "There were games we should have won and not got anything from. We just need a few little breaks and we will be right in there."
