Gretna ace turns down St Mirren chance

Gretna midfielder Gavin Skelton has turned down the chance to join St Mirren on a free transfer this summer. The 26-year-old is one of the club's longest serving players having joined back in 2001 when Gretna were a Unibond League club. Skelton is out of contract at the end of the season and St Mirren tried to lure the one-time Carlisle United man into playing for them. However, much to manager Davie Irons' delight, Skelton has committed his short-term future to the club, who remain hopeful of securing him on a longer contract.

Trust

"Gav has indicated he is happy to do a job at Gretna. I've real trust in Gavin," Irons said. "I know he can play at a higher level and he has ambitions to play with bigger clubs. He deserves to be able to do that at some stage, but at the moment he's staying. "St Mirren offered a pre-contract but Gavin isn't interested. As far as Gretna are concerned, we would love to keep him and we will make every effort to do that."
