St Mirren midfielder Stephen O'Donnell has been ruled out for three months after suffering a broken foot.
The 24-year-old has started just three league games this season but his absence means manager Gus MacPherson's options are reduced.
O'Donnell suffered the injury in training and MacPherson admitted it was a major blow to lose the player.
"Stephen O'Donnell broke down at training on Thursday morning with what turned out to be a metatarsal injury," said MacPherson.
Surgery"He is scheduled to get surgery on the injury next Tuesday with a rehab programme to follow which will probably take the biggest part of three months."
Better news on the injury front for MacPherson has been the return to training this week of striker Craig Dargo, who joined from Inverness in the summer but has been unable to play due to a knee problem.
Dargo has been pencilled in for a January return to the first team, and MacPherson plans to arrange friendlies to help with his match fitness later this month.
