Boss Martin Ling has backed Chris Robertson to fill the void left in the heart of Torquay's defence by Brian Saah's injury.
Centre-back Saah has been an ever-present for the Gulls this season, but a groin strain forced him off in the first half of the 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle.
Robertson, currently Torquay's longest-serving player, replaced the injured Saah and Ling believes he will now grasp his first team chance.
"I've always thought that we had three quality centre-halves at the club, and I was pleased for Robbo that he came into the team on Saturday and did well," he told the Western Morning News.
"He dropped out of the side with an injury a few weeks ago. We've gone on a run since then and he's had to sit on the bench and wait for his chance again.
"It's up to him to partner Mark Ellis now and make it hard for Brian to get back in when he's fit."
