TORQUAY UNITED boss Roy McFarland is planning a third raid on his former club Cambridge - for a player released by The Gulls less than a year ago!

McFarland has already brought Alex Russell and Martin McNeill with him to South Devon,  but he is now planning a swoop for Luke Guttridge, who was released by The Gulls during former boss Wes Saunders's spell in charge.

Guttridge was highly rated by former Gulls youth coach Paul Compton, and his performance in a Football Youth Alliance Cup match for The Gulls at Cambridge left a lasting impression on McFarland.

"We heard that Luke and another lad from around here, Adam Butterworth, were not going to be offered anything by the previous manager," McFarland said.

"We had a look at them, and that was enough, especially in Luke's case. I thought it was staggering that he was about to be released.

"He is a good player and he would add to our squad."

The Gulls have made an undisclosed offer for the Newton Abbot-born 19-year-old, but McFarland faces a tough task to lure him away from The Abbey.

Funds have been made available following their glamorous Worthington Cup draw against Premiership giants Tottenham, but U's boss John Beck was only singing the praises of the youngster this week following an impressive performance against Norwich reserves.
