Swindon could gain promotion to League One at the weekend

League Two leaders Swindon Town edged a step nearer to promotion, while bottom two Macclesfield Town and Hereford United went down to defeat. Meanwhile, Shrewsbury kept up their fine home record with another win and Torquay were held to a point. Swindon extended their lead at the top of League Two to seven points as they held on to record a slender 1-0 win against Northampton Town at the County Ground. Lee Holmes grabbed the winner on 52 minutes with a curling shot. Oxford United's battle to secure a play-off position is still ongoing after being held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Torquay United. Taiwo Atieno's last-minute equaliser salvaged a point for 10-man Torquay. Third-placed Shrewsbury Town are now unbeaten in 20 home games this season after defeating lowly Bradford City with Jermaine Grandison scoring the only goal of the game. First-team coach Craig Brewster was put in charge of Crawley Town until the end of the season after the surprise news that Steve Evans, who guided them to promotion last season had left to take over at rivals Rotherham United, but it did not seem to upset them as they recorded a come from behind win at Barnet to cement fourth spot. Southend United's promotion push has been wobbling in recent weeks and Paul Sturrock's side recovered from an abject Good Friday performance with a comfortable 2-0 win against AFC Wimbledon at Roots Hall. Rotherham United produced a fine home win against Cheltenham Town on the day former Crawley boss Evans was announced as their new manager. Ryan Cresswell bagged the winning goal in stoppage-time.

Crewe Alexandra are unbeaten in 12 games now after overcoming Bristol Rovers 3-0. The Railwaymen scored twice inside the opening six minutes thanks to Ajay Leitch-Smith and Kelvin Mellor with his first senior goal, which put them on their way. John Still's Dagenham & Redbridge have also been tip-toeing towards salvation and sealed a much-needed away win at Gillingham to boost their hopes of survival with a 2-1 success with Danny Green scoring the winner 17 minutes from time. Burton Albion caretaker manager Gary Rowett wants to prove he deserves the job on a permanent basis by making it three unbeaten with a thrilling 3-2 win against Morecambe at the Pirelli Stadium. Plymouth Argyle have been steadily inching towards survival in recent weeks and they secured all three points against Aldershot Town at Home Park thanks to striker Alex MacDonald's winning effort early on. Brian Horton's Macclesfield lost away to Port Vale, who are in administration, with Adam Yates scoring late on. Town are still sitting second from bottom and three points adrift from safety. Hereford are still propping up the table due to an inferior goal difference after going down to a 2-1 defeat at Accrington Stanley. Richard O'Kelly's United side have just one win in eight games now but Will Evans' fifth goal of the season thought he had stolen a share of the points until Padraig Amond's late winner. Hereford are now only three points adrift with four games to go.
