Barnsley have agreed a deal to bring free agent John Rooney to Oakwell until the end of the season.
Rooney, brother of striker Wayne, came through the ranks at Everton and Macclesfield before turning professional with the Silkmen in 2008.
The midfielder has spent time with New York Red Bulls and Orlando City and is set to wear the No.26 shirt with Keith Hill's side.
The 21-year-old's deal is subject to confirmation from the Football League.
Hill hoped the deal would be tied up last week but the move was delayed due to paperwork.
