Ex-Man City winger keen to seize second chance at Pompey

Manager Michael Appleton has backed Kelvin Etuhu to shine at Portsmouth after signing the winger until the end of the season. Sky Sports revealed earlier this week the 23-year-old former Manchester City man was poised to pen a deal at Fratton Park after training with Pompey for two months. Appleton has now confirmed Etuhu has joined the South Coast club on a free transfer and could make his debut at high-flying Championship rivals Cardiff on Saturday. The Nigerian-born winger was released by City last March following a jail term for assault and the Pompey boss feels he will have a point to prove. He told the Daily Star: "Kelvin has got a second chance and I know he is desperate to get going. "He is like a wounded animal and he wants to show he has a future.

Delighted

"He wants to be successful. He is humble, polite and the fact he has been coming in off his own back - training and not being paid a penny - says everything. "We are delighted to get him on board until the end of the season. "A lot of people won't know about it, because we have kept it very quiet, but he has been training with us for the past two months. "I wanted to sign him after about a week of him being here. "He has been impressive and we have had to keep it quiet because we know there were other people who wanted to nick him off us." Appleton has revealed Etuhu could feature against Cardiff, adding: "He is fit, he knows how we want to play, and if he needs to go in straight away he would have no issues."
