Schumi breathes sigh of relief

Bury captain Steven Schumacher is relieved at signing a new contract at Gigg Lane after waiting anxiously since summer.

The 27-year-old midfielder led the Shakers to promotion from League Two following his move from Crewe at the start of last term. Prior to the weekend victory over Preston, he signed a two-year extension to a deal that was due to run out at the end of the season. Schumacher suffered a torn calf in the early stages of the current campaign, but has returned to play a key role in the club's hot streak of six wins in nine league games. "I'm delighted to get it signed, finally," he told the Manchester Evening News. "There's been talk since the summer that I'd probably get a contract and it's dragged on a bit - the injury probably didn't help - so I'm glad it's over and done with now. "I believe we're all going in the right direction and it's something I wanted to be part of."
