Youngster seals Spotland switch

Rochdale have continued with their preparations for life in League One by snapping up Joe Widdowson. The 21-year-old defender moves to Spotland from Grimsby Town, who suffered relegation out of the Football League in 2009/10. The youngster only penned a three-year deal with the Mariners last summer, but feels he needs to move on in order to further his career. Having graduated from the famed academy ranks at West Ham United, he was a rare bright spark for Grimsby last season as they endured a troubled campaign. He is delighted to have agreed terms with Rochdale and is looking forward to cutting his teeth in the third tier. Dale boss Keith Hill opted to move for Widdowson after seeing Tom Kennedy leave for Leicester City. The latest new recruit will now help to fill the void at left-back created by that departure. Widdowson becomes the second summer signing made by Hill, with Brian Barry-Murphy having already joined on a two-year deal from Bury.
