Mansfield Town have suffered a blow with the news that David Artell injured his ankle in training last week.

The 29-year-old defender was closing in on a first-team return but will now spend a further two weeks on the sidelines.

Artell had a deep vein thrombosis scare earlier this year that has keep him out of action since January.

Stags boss Carlton Palmer has revealed Artell's disappointment at the blow and believes the experienced stopper will return before the end of the season.

"Dave fell awkwardly on his ankle during training last Friday which meant that we had to cancel a proposed friendly game in which he was going to have 45 minutes," explained Palmer to the club's official website.

"To say that he is distressed would be an understatement. He is chomping at the bit to get back into the squad and was absolutely distraught but I told him not to rush back as we do not to make things worse.

"The one thing I can guarantee, though is that Dave will be working very hard to get back because he has the perfect attitude and commitment that I like to see in my players and hopefully he will be back before the end of the season."
