Torquay United ended a 19-game winless streak in tremendous fashion with a 4-1 victory over fellow strugglers Grimsby Town.
The Gulls started the day seven points adrift at the bottom of League Two, but manager Lubos Kubik's first league win hands them a crucial lifeline, whilst moving the club to within five points of the 22nd-placed Mariners.
The Plainmoor faithful were given licence to dream of a rare victory inside three minutes when Jamie Ward slotted home from a tight angle after Lee Thorpe's pass.
After supplying the opener, Thorpe then stole the show with a hat-trick.
His first came just before half-time when he slammed a shot past Grimsby goalkeeper Phil Barnes from the edge of the area.
On the hour mark, Thorpe pounced after Stephen Cooke had hit the woodwork, and with seven minutes to go, the striker converted from the penalty spot to guarantee all three points for The Gulls.
Grimsby did respond in the dying minutes through Martin Paterson, but Alan Buckley's side left it far too late and now remain firmly mired in trouble.
