Martin Allen hailed his Notts County team and their two experienced hitmen after stunning Stevenage 2-0 at the Lamex Stadium.
Veteran striker Lee Hughes set the visitors on their way in first-half stoppage-time before another experienced campaigner - Ben Burgess - made it 2-0 shortly after the restart.
And that was all after Stevenage youngster Craig Reid saw a penalty-kick saved by Stuart Nelson in the sixth minute.
"There is lots of character in the squad and we showed that in abundance. I know very well Stevenage are a really tough prospect at home and so we had to do our homework on them," said Allen. "We did that and in the end it worked out well for us. We've got the experienced strikers up there and once again they've come up trumps between them.
"Lee has once again proved how dangerous he can be - especially at this level - I thought he took his goal extremely well as there was pressure there. As for Ben, he's been around for quite some years too but opposing teams can't afford to give him chances like that. If you offer him as much space as that he can produce the goods.
"All in all it's another very important three points on our long road. We're nicely tucked in there and we can simply keep making progress."
